Security in Algo Trading: It’s More Than Just Protecting the Code

When people talk about algo trading, the conversation usually starts with strategies.

Which indicator should we use?
How do we automate an entry?
How can we improve backtesting?
How can we connect a strategy to a broker API?

But there is another question that is equally important:

How secure is the system running the strategy?

An algorithmic trading platform is not simply a website displaying charts. It can involve user accounts, trading strategies, broker APIs, databases, order management, financial information, APIs and business rules.

That means security has to be considered at every stage of the system.

A Real-World Lesson From Website Auditing

During one of our website and application reviews, we went beyond simply checking whether the code was working correctly.

We started looking at the application from another perspective:

“What happens if someone uses this system in a way that the developer didn’t expect?”

This is where application security becomes interesting.

A feature can work perfectly during normal usage and still have a security weakness.

For example, a website may accept information through:

Login forms
Registration forms
Search fields
API requests
Query parameters
Trading-related inputs
Order parameters
Strategy configuration
File uploads
Admin interfaces

Each of these can become an entry point into the application.

So instead of asking only:

“Does this feature work?”

we also need to ask:

“What happens when unexpected or malicious data reaches this feature?”

Protecting Every Input Point

One of the most important principles we follow is input validation.

Any information coming from a user, API or external system should be treated carefully.

For example, a trading application may receiv
